This one-day course is a must for healthcare IT professionals where are seeking to get a basic understanding of the healthcare imaging and IT standards and its context and impact in the healthcare enterprise. Each standard has its own domain and provides unique benefits to a certain part of the enterprise, impacting workflow and efficiency while enabling end users to integrate systems from multiple vendors. i.e. allowing best-of-breed solutions. When pursuing this multi-vendor open standards approach, one needs to make sure that the systems truly support open standards to make sure that they are interchangeable and can be replaced in the future without significant migration costs.

Detailed Learning Objectives

Participants will understand healthcare IT standards from a high level perspective and know how they facilitate the information exchange between a Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS), the departmental information systems (RIS, CIS, LIS, etc.), Electronic Medical Record Systems (EMR?s), hospital information systems (HIS) and other healthcare IT solutions, including bed site and consumer communications. A high level overview of the DICOM and HL7 standards will be provided as well as important IHE profiles such as PIX/PDQ, the importance of controlled vocabularies such as SNOMED and RADLEX, what is new about HL7 (Version 3, CDA) and the potential impact of FHIR and DICOMWeb. This class is for healthcare IT architects, project managers, purchasing and regulatory professionals, interface analysts and anyone else who is looking to enrich their knowledge about existing and emerging healthcare IT standards and is looking to get an overview of these standards.
