Course ObjectivesYou will be able to:
- Identify key hardware components of PACS architecture, including network components, servers, diagnostic workstations and printers.
- List the key functionality of the various PACS components.
- Differentiate between common PACS architectures such as Web-based viewing, integrated Web servers, multiple tier archives, the role of specialty workstations and modalities.
- Distinguish PACS architectures from different vendors (similarities and differences).
Skills TaughtAfter the course you will be able to:
- Determine what PACS systems are meant to accomplish.
- Identify the potential impact of PACS implementation on productivity.
- Approximate the production data rate of a PACS system.
- Differentiate between the architecture and features offered by different players in this industry.
Course Contents
Lesson 1: PACS Definition, Functionality, and Major Building BlocksThis lesson covers the definition of the PACS system, its functionality and major building blocks. After this lesson you will be able to:
- Explain the definition and major features and benefits of a PACS.
- Identify all major PACS building blocks -- external interfaces, modalities, image manager/archive, network and hardcopy devices.
Lesson 2: PACS CoreThis lesson discusses the PACS Core or "backbone," also known as the image manager/archive, workflow manager and network. After this lesson you will be able to:
- Distinguish between core PACS components (input queues, image manager, archive and workflow manager).
- Estimate the archive throughput and capacity requirements as well as establish retention policies.
- Recognize the different archive implementations (DAS, SAN, NAS, grids) and protocols as well as media.
- Recommend capability for high availability, business continuity and disaster recovery.
- Explain the advantages of ASP/SSP.
- Plan a data migration strategy and procedures, identify issues, and determine costs.
- Differentiate between the different network components typically used for the PACS network.
Lesson 3: Display/PrintThis lesson discusses PACS image displays and printing capabilities and features. After this lesson you will be able to:
- Explain why and how a workflow manager is used.
- Differentiate between the different types of workstations and explain how they are used.
- List the most common functions on a viewing station.
- Predict the impact of implementing annotations and key images in a proprietary manner.
- Explain how key images work and what their function is.
- Use the phrase ?"Web viewing"? and explain what it means.
- Determine when and how printing is used in a PACS environment.
Lesson 4: Commercial VendorsThis lesson discusses some of the vendors who provide PACS systems. After this lesson you will be able to:
- Name and recognize the major vendors.
- Recognize the major claims they make and be able to differentiate their architectures.
- Discuss the major commercial trends in this market.
