The Communication standard HL7 (Health level Seven) is especially developed for the Health
care domain and accommodates electronic communication between Health care Information systems
such as laboratory, radiology, billing, patient scheduling, etc. This book gives an
introduction to HL7; its basic concepts, and its goals are described. The international
affiliate organization is mentioned.
This book will provide the reader with an idea about the message structure, an example
of which is explained in detail. Its scope is to be an introduction, it is not a
comprehensive manual or programmers guide. The intended audience is system administrators,
IT personnel, engineers, and anyone who likes to get a flavor on the HL7 standard.
The authors are Kai Heitmann, Bernd Blobel and Joachim Dudeck, from HL7 Germany,
who initially published this booklet for the German health environment. Its success
led to this translation for international distribution.
