Course Objectives
You will be able to:
  • Make a diagram showing how PACS components are connected from a workflow perspective, including any relevant interfaces.
  • Select the right tools to perform an analysis.
  • Appreciate the differences in workflow between various specialties and organizational structures, particularly radiology, cardiology and radiation therapy.

Skills Taught
After the course you will be able to:
  • Identify potential bottlenecks and issues for a typical imaging workflow.
  • Read and interpret workflow diagrams.
  • Perform a simple departmental workflow analysis.
  • Use different workflow tools to create simple workflow diagrams and charts.

Course Contents

Lesson 1: Workflow: What is it and how does it impact radiology?
After this lesson you will be able to:
  • Determine why and when to perform workflow assessment in the context of PACS implementations.
  • Distinguish between the typical radiology scenarios -- ICU, ER, teleradiology, physician distribution, specialty reading, main radiology and imaging centers -- and know the major benefits and differences in workflow.
  • Be familiar with the workflow steps, from beginning to end, in a common scenario for a patient admission to the ER. This provides the basis knowledge for you to perform your own analysis and determine any exceptions and variances.
Lesson 2: Cardiology and Radiation Therapy
After this lesson you will be able to:
  • Assess typical differences between cardiology and radiology so you can anticipate and facilitate workflow changes.
  • Assess radiation therapy workflow and how it differs from radiology.
Lesson 3: Teaching Files, Clinical Trials, Post- acquisition and Media Import/Export
After this lesson you will be able to:
  • Develop and define policies for different types of teaching files based on how they are used.
  • Design the workflow for clinical trials based on where information is de-identified and clinical trial information is added.
  • Interpret and design the workflow for post-acquisition processing.
  • Develop policies and procedures taking into consideration the challenges with importing and exporting hardcopy and softcopy media.
Lesson 4: Workflow Tools
After this lesson you will be able to:
  • Use the most common workflow tools to perform a workflow analysis.
  • Select the proper workflow tools depending on the application.
  • Determine a critical path analysis for a workflow.
