(Running time: 1 hour 17 minutes) This module describes the major Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) components. It shows several scenarios where a PACS system is being used, the impact on productivity, and lists major players (vendors) in this market as well as statistics on the installed base. Each component of the PACS system, acquisition, interfacing, archiving, viewing, printing, networking and its associated security is discussed. An actual PACS system, at the VA medical center in Houston, is shown and the workflow of images from a modality acquisition all the way through the system is followed. The archiving (MOD jukebox and RAID) and network infrastructure is shown and explained by the local support people from the VA. The radiologist also gives feedback on how PACS impacts her operation and its advantages.

This course is beneficial for anyone who wants to learn about PACS, especially the support people such as system administrators and service, but also people involved with the potential purchase or even implementation and deployment of these type of systems.
